Campus Drive
|
Fill and smooth misaligned or open joints.
|
$ 11,800
|
Students regularly traversing the campus brought to the attention of
the Campus' Disability Support Service that several uneven or misaligned
joints in the pavement present safety hazards for wheelchair users. As
a primary pedestrian corridor, there is a high likelihood that a wheelchair
would flip after hitting a poor pavement joint. The project will eliminate
the identified safety risk. This project was deferred from the 2001 program
due to budgetary constraints.

Install unisex toilet room.
|
$ 35,000
|
The ground floor of this facility is accessible but the restrooms are
on the inaccessible floor above. The Office of Human Relations Programs
(OHRP) resides on the ground floor and has campus constituents who are
disabled. Addition of a bathroom on the ground floor is required to serve
the needs of OHRP's constituents. While the building is planned to be
demolished in 2007 to make way for the Multi-Media Instructional Center,
it is imperative to provide accessible restrooms for OHRP.

Installation of additional automatic door control at front entrance.
|
$ 3,000
|
Currently, there is an automatic door opener on the outside of the building
at the accessible door and on the inside of the building in the lobby
at the accessible door. However, there is no control for this set of
doors from within the vestibule. Since there are displays within the
vestibule that individuals may stop to look at, the automatic doors could
close and the individual using a wheelchair would be stuck in the vestibule
and unable to open the doors.

Replace existing interior signage in the Lee Building, Mitchell Building,
Reckord Armory, Chemical and Nuclear Engineering Building, and Chesapeake
Building
|
$ 30,000
|
A number of the campus' buildings have interior signs which are insufficient
for providing sufficient identification and direction to persons with
visual or cognitive impairments. The current ADAAG requirements for contrast,
installation heights, braille, etc. are not being met. This project is
the first of a phased effort to bring all the campus buildings into compliance.
