AccessUM Program --> 2003 Alternate Projects

Justification

1

Campus Drive

Fill and smooth misaligned or open joints.

 $ 11,800

Students regularly traversing the campus brought to the attention of the Campus' Disability Support Service that several uneven or misaligned joints in the pavement present safety hazards for wheelchair users.  As a primary pedestrian corridor, there is a high likelihood that a wheelchair would flip after hitting a poor pavement joint.  The project will eliminate the identified safety risk.  This project was deferred from the 2001 program due to budgetary constraints.

2

075

Shriver Lab

Install unisex toilet room.

 $ 35,000

The ground floor of this facility is accessible but the restrooms are on the inaccessible floor above.  The Office of Human Relations Programs (OHRP) resides on the ground floor and has campus constituents who are disabled.  Addition of a bathroom on the ground floor is required to serve the needs of OHRP's constituents.  While the building is planned to be demolished in 2007 to make way for the Multi-Media Instructional Center, it is imperative to provide accessible restrooms for OHRP.

3

147

Hornbake Library

Installation of additional automatic door control at front entrance.

 $ 3,000

Currently, there is an automatic door opener on the outside of the building at the accessible door and on the inside of the building in the lobby at the accessible door.  However, there is no control for this set of doors from within the vestibule.  Since there are displays within the vestibule that individuals may stop to look at, the automatic doors could close and the individual using a wheelchair would be stuck in the vestibule and unable to open the doors.

4

Various

Replace existing interior signage in the Lee Building, Mitchell Building, Reckord Armory, Chemical and Nuclear Engineering Building, and Chesapeake Building

 $ 30,000

A number of the campus' buildings have interior signs which are insufficient for providing sufficient identification and direction to persons with visual or cognitive impairments.  The current ADAAG requirements for contrast, installation heights, braille, etc. are not being met.  This project is the first of a phased effort to bring all the campus buildings into compliance.

5

037

Shoemaker Building

Modify toilet rooms (1202A and 1204) and replace drinking fountain (1299).

 $ 14,400

Main floor of this academic building has toilet facilities and a drinking fountain that are not fully compliant despite various renovations made over time.

6

048

Francis Scott Key Hall

Modify toilet rooms (0108WT, 0112MT, 1108MT, and 1114WT).

 $ 10,757

Several toilets in this academic building are not fully accessible.  These improvements will provide facilities that are compliant with current accessibility standards.

7

231

Microbiology Building

Modify toilet rooms (0144, 0145)

 $  5,336

Toilet room accessories and fixtures are not compliant and need to be installed and/or replaced.

8

146

Art-Sociology Building

Modify toilet room (2109)

 $  7,355

Toilet room accessories and fixtures are not compliant and need to be installed and/or replaced.

9

038

LeFrak Hall

Modify toilet rooms (0109MT, 0206MT and 1216WT) and replace drinking fountain (2295).

 $ 11,000

Main floors of this academic building have toilet facilities that were built to accessibility standards that are now obsolete. Improved accessibility is required for these toilet rooms and a drinking fountain.

10

046

Marie Mount Hall

Modify men's toilet rooms (0107, 1107, 2107, and 3107).

 $ 13,300

The toilet rooms located on principal classroom/laboratory floors were built to accessibility standards that are now obsolete.  Renovations are required for compliance to current design standards.

11

071

Lee Building

Modify toilet rooms (1104MT and 1130WT) and replace drinking fountain (0198).

 $ 16,700

The toilets on the main floor of this student services building remain not fully accessible.  The proposed changes to these toilets and a drinking fountain will provide fully compliant facilities.

12

Various

Emergency Funds

 $ 23,532

Funds reserved for emergent projects required to correct specific access deficiencies discovered during the year.

FY 2003 Funding Total

 $ 182,179
