The 50th anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education decision presents a
very special learning opportunity. This critical judgment by the Supreme Court
was handed down not so long ago, and yet there are many who are not aware of,
or who have forgotten, the issue at stake and the massive shift for the public
good in education and other areas that resulted from it.
There are many
lessons to be learned and relearned from reflection on this defining moment in
our history. The University of Maryland has planned activities this spring for
students, faculty, staff, and friends to join in considering the context in
which the decision was made, the impact of Brown during the half century that
has passed, and the implications of this decision for the future.
I hope that
everyone can join some of the events listed on this web site.
C.D. Mote, President
University of Maryland
