John M. Colby was the principal of the Allegany County Academy in Cumberland, Maryland, when he was elected president of the Maryland Agricultural College in July 1860. The College's enrollment peaked at 78 during his tenure, but dropped off sharply with the approach of war. Only 17 students and three professors stayed through the July commencement.
Colby resigned during the 1860-1861 academic year to become an officer in the Union army.
