UM continues expanding its relationships with China, further developing its partnerships with several new companies for the planned UM China Research Park. MOUs with UM are being developed with three Chinese companies and UM has identified 10 Maryland companies willing to partner with Chinese companies locating in College Park. Expos have been held in three sites in China—Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou—to attract partners. Currently 20 university presidents from Guangdong Province are at UMCP in a month-long program on university administration.

The University of Maryland's chapter of Engineers Without Borders continues its impressive record of success, sending UM students to Brazil and Thailand this past year. Currently EWB students are undertaking two solar energy projects in communities in Burkina Faso. These projects benefit all of their collaborators, improving living conditions in the developing world while giving students an opportunity for international service.

The University of Maryland has joined in a partnership with the Peace Corps, providing students another path to international experience. Students working toward a Master's of Science in Sustainable Development and Conservation Biology through the College of Chemical and Life Science, can now use Peace Corps service to fulfill their internship requirement. Students will use their specialized training in environmental fields to enhance Peace Corps projects in agriculture and natural resource. UM continues to inspire its graduates to public service through this program, ranking 12th in the nation among large U.S. colleges and universities for the number of graduates who join the Peace Corps.

To close the 150th anniversary celebration in Taipei, UM hosted an Asian Leadership Forum, attended by the vice president of Taiwan, along with university and business leaders from across Asia. The event provided an opportunity for widespread networking among University alumni and friends across Asia.

Study abroad continued to expand, with 1,400 UM students studying in 45 countries last year, 29 of them outside Europe. UM students also took advantage of $50,000 in scholarship money to go abroad.
