CONCLUSION—
THE UNIVERSITY AND THE STATE: PARTNERS IN EXCELLENCE

The University is creating its own pathway forward through its strategic planning underway across the campus. This planning, underway for more than a year, is crafting a 10-year plan that will commit the campus to achievement milestones. Under the guidance of Provost Nariman Farvardin and including the commitments of deans, directors, vice presidents, faculty, students, staff and alumni, the plan combines major transformational ideas with rigorous commitments and diligent applications. It will be finished and ready for implementation during 2008.

We are committed to building a world-class university for the State and are prepared to take the responsibility ourselves to do it. Great Expectations, The Campaign for Maryland will raise $1 billion toward this goal and significant internal commitments are planned. Higher standards of achievement, a culture of continuous advancement, innovation and entrepreneurship are expected across the University. We are marshalling resources for those in greatest need and reallocating funds internally to optimize utilization of resources and maximize achievements. Even with our best efforts, the State’s support is crucial to achieving this goal. The challenges of infrastructure, space and operating support are significant. Building a world-class university at the flagship campus is a goal that will transform the quality of life for all Marylanders and their children. We hope that you will join us.
