State Support for Research and Economic Vitality
Dear faculty and staff:
Recently, Maryland Senate President Mike Miller and House Speaker Michael Busch introduced a joint legislative agenda to expand economic development in the state.
One initiative is the co-funding – with matching public and private funds – of endowed chairs in Maryland's universities to recruit top talent in areas of science and technology that would generate innovation and economic opportunity. Another initiative is the creation of reduced tax zones around universities in order to promote private investments and neighborhood revitalization.
Here is the link to my op-ed in the Baltimore Sun that describes the impact these initiatives could have on the University of Maryland and College Park: http://ter.ps/4ml. It is based on my remarks at the press conference of the legislative leaders announcing this agenda.
