In 2008, the University of Maryland developed a comprehensive and bold 10-year strategic plan, “Transforming Maryland: Higher Expectations.” In the years since, we have experienced a remarkable rise in accomplishment and reputation. By any measure, our University is now one of the nation’s front-rank public research universities. New opportunities now promise even greater attainments, and we will continue on our path to be considered “equal to the best” among all universities in the world.

The Year in Review

The end of an academic year is a time to celebrate the accomplishments of our graduating students. It is also a time to reflect on the university’s progress over the past year and what it augurs for the future with respect to academic excellence, innovation, internationalization and the revitalization of College Park.

The University’s Future

The year is 2020.

Students at this university are among the most talented and diverse anywhere. For the past six years, they have worked with our faculty in hot pursuit of quantum computing in the $126 million Physical Sciences Building that opened in 2014.

As the spring term ends, I look back with pride at the contributions and accomplishments of this university’s students over the past year.

The start of a new school year is a transcendent moment, alive with possibility and dreams to fulfill. The 155th academic year at this university brings new talent, new educational programs, new facilities and a new era of Big Ten athletic competition and academic collaboration.
