UMD Community Responds to Tragedy

We are devastated by the murder of  Second Lieutenant Richard Collins III this weekend. We are devastated by the racism and hate that exists in this world.  And we are devastated that hate may have played a role in this and other horrific crimes across the country.

The horrific assault that took the life of a young man on our campus on Saturday morning has shocked, saddened, and angered our community and beyond. 

A Moment of Silence Today, 1 PM

As we begin today, at 1 PM, the spring commencement exercises to celebrate the graduating class 2017 of the University of Maryland, I would like to ask all of us, wherever we are, to please join in a moment of silence to mourn and honor a Bowie State University student, who lost his life in a senseless and unprovoked assault here on our campus, yesterday morning.

In October 2016, I charged this Joint Task Force—chaired by Steve Petkas, Resident Life, and comprised of 16 faculty, staff, and students representing areas from student conduct, to public health, to athletics—to examine how the University of Maryland can better prevent sexual assault within our community.

Edward St. John Learning and Teaching Center

Last Thursday, the University of Maryland dedicated the new Edward St. John Learning and Teaching Center....Now we have a large and spectacular building, designed for active, collaborative, and technology-enhanced learning and pedagogy, one of the finest of its kind anywhere....Some 12,000 students every day will fill its classrooms, group study spaces, and labs....Thank you to the many donors, state leaders in Annapolis, and members of our UMD community for making possible the offering of an unexcelled education to our students.

Decennial accreditation of UMD

Dear University of Maryland community,

This is the year of our ​mandatory ​decennial accreditation review​ by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSC)​. ​​It focuses ​on the educational mission of ​the University​. ​

Our last review was in 2007, on the eve of the Great Recession and the ensuing "new normal" ​ (decreasing state funding and increasing tuition​) ​that ​is​ reshaping American public higher education.
