Statement on the U.S. Department of Education’s “Interim Guidance” on Campus Sexual Misconduct and Assault

The U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights (OCR) released on Friday, September 22, 2017, new "interim guidance" on campus sexual misconduct and assault, and also rescinded the guidance it provided in 2011 and 2014.

This "interim guidance," which is in effect as OCR begins the formal process of rule-making, does not change the University of Maryland's resolute commitment to a learning, living, and working environment on campus that is free from sexual misconduct and violence.

We are devastated by the murder of  Second Lieutenant Richard Collins III this weekend. We are devastated by the racism and hate that exists in this world.  And we are devastated that hate may have played a role in this and other horrific crimes across the country.

A Moment of Silence Today, 1 PM

As we begin today, at 1 PM, the spring commencement exercises to celebrate the graduating class 2017 of the University of Maryland, I would like to ask all of us, wherever we are, to please join in a moment of silence to mourn and honor a Bowie State University student, who lost his life in a senseless and unprovoked assault here on our campus, yesterday morning.

A Note of Condolence

I am writing to all of you today with a heavy heart.

Joint President/Senate Sexual Assault Prevention Task Force Statement

In October 2016, I charged this Joint Task Force—chaired by Steve Petkas, Resident Life, and comprised of 16 faculty, staff, and students representing areas from student conduct, to public health, to athletics—to examine how the University of Maryland can better prevent sexual assault within our community.
