Decennial accreditation of UMD

April 6, 2017

Dear University of Maryland community,

This is the year of our mandatory decennial accreditation review by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSC). It focuses on the educational mission of the University.

Our last review was in 2007, on the eve of the Great Recession and the ensuing "new normal" (decreasing state funding and increasing tuition) that is reshaping American public higher education.

President Loh's Statement on Fliers

MARCH 14, 2017

The white nationalist posters found on college campuses, including our own, contain detestable language that is an affront to who we are, and what we stand for, as the State's flagship university. As a community, we stand for excellence, diversity, and inclusion. We stand against all forms of ignorance and hate. UMPD is investigating this matter as a hate bias.

2017 Report to the General Assembly

With strong continuing support from the General Assembly and Governor Larry Hogan, our flagship university is turning knowledge into jobs. Our researchers invent the future. Our talented faculty educates a top workforce. Our dynamism attracts new business and investment. Our expertise helps businesses launch and thrive. All this creates economic and social wealth.

Executive Actions and Staying True to Our Values

Dear University of Maryland community,

As a public institution, the University of Maryland does not normally take stands on political issues. However, we have an obligation to speak out when government actions are fundamentally antithetical to the core values and missions of the institution, especially when they adversely impact many members of our community.

Public Statement of UMD

The University of Maryland joins other member institutions of the Association of American Universities and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities in expressing concern over the temporary banning from entry into the U.S. of visa and green card holders of seven mostly Muslim countries. The potential for negatively impacting the educational and research missions of our campus is significant. We are currently assessing how this executive order may affect the students and scholars at our campus who come from these countries.

True to Our Values

Dear University of Maryland community,

We begin this new semester as a rift grows in our nation. An "us-vs.-them" mind set prevails. We talk more about our differences than about our common ground.

Education, "dreamers", and DACA

This is a time of grave uncertainty and vulnerability for our students on DACA status. They deserve our support and our country needs them.

Sexual Assault Prevention Task Force

A new "Joint President/Senate Task Force on Sexual Assault Prevention" will propose a comprehensive strategy to address this important issue. Its recommendations are due by March 31, 2017.
